About the Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces of bread, usually white, but you can use any your favorite breads

  • 2 slices of your favorite cheese, or 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese

  • Butter, oil, or mayonnaise

Preparation

  1. Pre-heat skillet to medium heat (I prefer cast iron)

  2. Butter on one side of each piece of bread. You can use either butter or margarine, oil, or mayonnaise.

  3. Place two pieces, buttered side down, on the warm skillet.

  4. Put the slice of your favorite cheese on the exposed unbuttered side of the bread that is in the pan. I actually prefer to use the shredded cheese because it melts faster, and I can pile it higher.

  5. Place the other buttered bread on top of the cheese with the buttered side exposed.

  6. Turn when golden brown and let it brown to golden brown on the other side. Make sure that the cheese is all melted inside.

  7. Cut diagonally (because it is pretty that way) and serve hot.

There is an art to making the perfect grilled cheese sandwich - to make it all toasted crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Practice until you are perfect and enjoy the journey.
